Sufficient rest and deep sleep are required in order for the brain and body to function at their best throughout your day. Most adults require a minimum of 7 hours of deep sleep each night. If you are not able to fall asleep, or wake up frequently during the night, then you are probably not getting enough rest. The causes may be emotional, physical, or both. The result, however, is the same. You are operating at half-mast and this may cause any number of other negative effects in your life such as stress, inability to focus, a weakened immune system, irritation, a slowed metabolic rate, and so much more.

When we are tired during the day due to a lack of sleep, our judgement can also be impaired. When a child has not had enough rest, it is easy to see the negative results. As adults we can moderate our emotions better than children, but the effect is the same. We can be irritable, behave irrationally, demonstrate poor judgment, have a lack of energy, and become physically impaired and lack coordination.
