What keeps you from being great in your life? What keeps you from doing that thing that you really want to do? What keeps you from showing up?
For me, it was PERFECTION. I have been a perfectionist all of my life and what I am now learning is that this has kept me from being GREAT! Ouch.
- Being a perfectionist leads to excuses.
- Being a perfectionist leads to procrastination.
- Being a perfectionist leads to disappointment.
- Being a perfectionist leads to heartache.
- Being a perfectionist leads to playing small.
- Being a perfectionist leads to stress.
- Being a perfectionist leads to control. And as you know, control is a myth.
What if you did the very best you can do RIGHT NOW?
- What would that look like?
- What would you be going for?
And if you did the very best you can do right now, do you think that you would learn something which would help you do even better next time?
The key to success is to make more mistakes. It takes Courage to make mistakes, and yet that is the only way to grow.
If you never go for what you want, you are guaranteed not to get it.
However, if you take a small step today, and fail forward, and if you did this every day, or multiple times a day, do you think that you would achieve what it is that you want? I think, ‘yes’!
The photo at the top of this email is a patch of grass growing out from its burnt remains after a fire came through the Superstition Mountains Wilderness Area. Grass doesn’t strain to grow. Did the grass think to wait until the conditions were perfect before growing again? Do you think the grass thought that it would be better to not grow again since the fire season may not be over? Did the grass maybe say, there are other patches of grass growing, so I don’t need to… No, I don’t think so. The grass just came back, and isn’t it beautiful? The contrast of the vibrant green against its coal-black charred roots was a beautiful sight lining the trail as we hiked.
‘When we walk on the Earth with reverence, beauty will decide to trust us.’
John O’Donohue
And you will decide to trust yourself!
So you know how I insist on walking the talk, so I have started making Instagram posts every day to provide you all with tools to get, and keep you empowered in your day-to-day lives. I had previously only shared the occasional post when I was dressed up and had makeup on; however, there are days that I work from my office in shorts. So I decided to just ‘show up’, regardless of whether I felt that I looked perfect or not. It is more important to me to share tools to keep you empowered than it is to continue to be a perfectionist. So see for yourself what that looks like, and get a good laugh! And please share my Instagram channel with your friends who you think can also benefit from these tools.
